Mostly because making him a robust character has really nipped in the bud the Doctor/Companion romance that has been a theme of the reboot (except with my favesy, Donna). But. *Spoilers ahead.* In “A Good Man Goes to War” I felt like the story line had culminated in making Rory a hero at the expense of making Amy more or less passive. And that this was also the case in the two episodes preceding. Amy hung around by the Doctor’s side, while Rory was out looking for Jennifer and discovering there were multiple Flesh Jennifers running around. So. I really hope that both Rory and Amy can be heroes, and that creating another active male character doesn’t mean the writers will just take the easy way out and write Amy into boring passive emoticon mode. I mean, there’s a lot of competition on the show now for hero-dom, what with River and the Doctor and Rory. Let’s just not forget the Companion, who should also be earning her hero stripes.

Spoken word poet, Beau Sia, responds to Alexandra Wallace’s Asians in the UCLA Library rant: 

after watching “asians in the library,” and many subsequent postings in response, i wrote this. rather than attack alexandra wallace for her thoughts, i decided to write a persona piece in her voice, as a means to address some of the greater issues revealed in her rant. in the end, this poem isn’t really about her and what she said, but more the thoughts and beliefs people hold, without considering the entire history that may have led them to think and believe in the manner that they do. my hope is that we can all use this moment to recognize that we all need to improve our ability to understand and share this world with each other. this is just a small contribution to furthering that conversation. thank you for listening.

Yesterday I reblogged a video response to the Alexandra Wallace Incident. It was musical, and for a moment the catchy chorus obscured its sexism. But then I regretted it, and I deleted it.

This one is better. Way, way better. Bravo, Mr. Sia.

Signal Boost: Etsy has published real names and purchase histories of all buyers

Last week, crafting marketplace Etsy.com published the real name and purchasing history of their buyers to the Web. These purchases include sex toys, gay literature, drug pipes and other presumably private transactions.

In reverse, an Etsy.com visitor can search for a sex toy shop, and follow that store’s recent purchases to a list of shoppers complete in some cases with real name, location and photo. No login is required for either search. Etsy has also published users’ “favorites”, which had appeared to users to be a way of privately tagging items.

The changes are retroactive to all prior Etsy users. My 2009 purchase — my only activity on the site — popped up in a Google Alert for my name. I’ve since closed my account.

Please reblog. Etsy made no attempt to let users know this was happening and the management is not responding to anyone. The only way for people to hear about this is through online friends.

I would mention something about being confused by President’s Day but then I remembered my whole country not only takes off the Queen’s Birthday (not the current one’s, Victoria’s) and Alberta has Family Day in order to distract us all from Ralph Klein’s son’s drug abuse. (It’s in February.)

In Manitoba it’s Louis Riel Day today. Which, I think it’s awesome that we have a day for him, but I’m kind of confused that it’s just a randomly picked day about half way between New Year’s and Easter. Riel’s name seems kind of tacked on.
